Truth-In-Savings
Act (TISA)
The Truth-In-Savings Act (TISA)
is a federal banking
regulation adopted by the
NCUA. TISA is designed to
assist consumers in
comparing the accounts
offered by all depository
institutions. TISA primarily
regulates the disclosure of
information about fees,
dividend rates, annual
percentage yields, and other
account terms. Additionally,
TISA limits the methods by
which credit unions can
determine the account
balance on which dividends
are paid.
Annual Percentage
Yield (APY)
Annual Percentage Yield is
the rate of return on an
investment when the
compounded interest is added
back to the original amount
invested. The APY is a
percentage rate reflecting
the total amount of
dividends paid on an
account, based on the
dividend rate and frequency
of compounding for a 365-day
period. The APY is a
projection made based on
certain assumptions at the
time of disclosure. The APY
and the APYE (see below) do
not normally match.
Annual Percentage
Yield Earned (APYE)
The APYE is the actual
percentage rate of dividends
paid to a specific share
account up to the most
recently completed dividend
period.
